A Teacher from Washington state decides to do a house swap with a Boston Professor to be able to surprise and spend Christmas with her daughter.

For day 44 of my holiday film marathon, I am watching the Hallmark Channel’s “Debbie Macomber’s Trading Christmas”.

The film is based on the novel by Debbie Macomber and is directed by Michael M. Scott and a teleplay by Bruce Graham.

The film would feature a solid cast of talent including Tom Cavanagh (“Ed”, “Scrubs”, “The Flash”), Faith Ford (“Murphy Brown”, “Hope & Faith”), Gil Bellows (“The Shawshank Redemption”, “Patriot”, “Ally McBeal”), Gabrielle Miller (“Corner Gas”, “Trigger Me”), Emma Lahana (“Cloak & Dagger”, “Hellcats”), Andrew Francis (“The Invisible”, “Final Destination 3”) and more.

The film revolves around Emily Spengler (portrayed by Faith Ford), a 2nd grade teacher living in South Woodbourne, Washington and its been three years since her husband has died and she is expecting her daughter Heather (portrayed by Emma Lahana) to come for Christmas.

Heather is a student at Boston College and she wants to celebrate Christmas with her boyfriend Jason (portrayed by Andrew Francis) in Arizona, but she doesn’t tell her mother that.  She just tells her mother that she wants to do other things for Christmas.  This saddens Emily who wants to spend time with her daughter and she tells her good friend Faith Kerrigan (portrayed by Gabrielle Miller), who is a divorced event planner living in San Francisco all about how she is feeling.

Emily comes up with an idea of doing a home swap comes up and Emily would go to Boston to do a surprise visit (not knowing her daughter is in Arizona).   Meanwhile, Faith comes up with an idea to surprise Emily by visiting her in Washington.

Meanwhile, we are introduced to two brothers in Boston.  Charles Johnson (portrayed by Tom Cavanagh) is an English professor and writer working on his latest novel but is having writer’s block and trouble as he has missed several deadlines.

His brother Ray (portrayed by Gil Bellows), an owner of a software security company, suggests he get away to something quiet to concentrate on his writing. So, Charles goes to a house swap site and instantly swaps with Emily, who will stay at his place in Boston, while he stays at her place in Washington.

But what happens when Emily goes to Boston, to find out her daughter is there and meets Ray Johnson.  Meanwhile, for Charles Johnson, what happens when his quiet writing retreat is interrupted by the neighbors, but also a visit from Faith, who is expecting to find Emily at her Boston home?

“Debbie Macomber’s Trading Christmas” is an older Hallmark Channel film but the film doesn’t show it’s age.  The film still has its winter holiday feel, Christmas decorations but the film is focused more on the romantic aspect of people moving on and discovering new love.

Emily, who has been a widow for three years, Faith who is divorced and hasn’t been with a man in awhile, Charles who tends to have an anger towards women and the holidays for some reason and Ray who has been busy, focused on work and meeting a woman that he enjoys spending time with.

For the most part, “Debbie Macomber’s Trading Christmas” is an entertaining romantic comedy and one I definitely recommend watching!
