The One about the DK EYEWITNESS “NEW YORK CITY” Travel Guide

I actually had wanted to review this, as I was planning to go to New York City and this book was quite helpful in planning for trip…prior to COVID-19.

So, while my travel plans are delayed, I still want to give my thoughts on this travel guide.  So, someday soon…. I will enjoy New York City hopefully in the near future, catch a few New York Yankees games and eat amazing food, and so much more!

I have had the opportunity to review numerous travel books from different companies over the years and for New York City, this is the first time I have reviewed a travel book of NYC from DK Eyewitness.

One of the things that I like for travel books to have is a lot of photos which emphasize the beauty of the location.

And having gone through this “New York City” book, DK Travel is actually very well done and as for photos, the booklet features many!

The chapters are broken down as follows:

Discover

  • Welcome to New York City
  • Reasons to Love New York City
  • Explore New York City
  • Getting to know New York City
  • New York City Itineraries
  • New York City Your Way
  • A Year in New York City
  • A Brief History

The “Discover” section is well-done as it shows the wonderful areas to visit around NYC.   And if anything I think this is a section that people wanting to go to New York will probably spend the most time perusing.

The “Experience” portion is fantastic as it shows a map and it shows key areas to visit and you get a brief history of each area and tips for that area..  So, if you know which areas you want to visit, you can zero in various parts of New York City.

  • Lower Manhattan
  • Lower East Side
  • Chinatown, Little Italy and Nolita
  • SoHo and Tribeca
  • Greenwich Village
  • East Village
  • Gramercy and the Flatiron District
  • Chelsea and the Garment District
  • Midtown West and the Theater District
  • Lower Midtown
  • Upper Midtown
  • Upper East Side
  • Central Park and the Upper West Side
  • Harlem and Morningside Heights
  • Brooklyn
  • Beyond the Center

Need to Know

  • Before you Go
  • Getting Around
  • Practical Information
  • Index
  • Phrase Book
  • Announcements

The “Need to Know” section goes into ways for one to plan for their trip, information about personal security, emergency numbers and more!

The book does a great job in promoting tourism in New York City.  And I hope things return to normalcy soon and while a few places I have wanted to visit (ie. pubs and diners) may open or not open, I still feel there is a lot of places to visit in New York City and so many things to enjoy.

So, I’m grateful to DK Eyewitness for this “New York City 2020” guide  and I look forward to visiting New York City, if not this year, hopefully next year.
