In Goto City, Nagasaki Prefecture, the area of seaweed beds that could be confirmed was over 2,800 hectares in 1989, but it plummeted to 0.8 hectares in 2018. This phenomenon, called “isoyake” (seaweed barrenness), is occurring all over Japan, as seaweed disappears from the ocean. In Goto City, there are people who are fighting against this isoyake.
