Due to soaring fuel prices caused by the escalating tensions in Iran, All Nippon Airways (ANA) and Japan Airlines (JAL) have announced they will be significantly increasing their fuel surcharges, effective for tickets issued in May. Fuel surcharges, collected separately from fares on ANA and JAL’s international flights, are reviewed every two months.
Previously, the surcharge reflected the average fuel price from three to four months prior. However, due to the sharp increase in fuel prices (approximately 2.5 times) following the escalating tensions in Iran, the surcharge will now be based on the average price from two to three months prior. Accordingly, both companies will be accelerating the price revisions to tickets issued in May.
For routes from Japan to North America and Europe, ANA’s surcharge will increase from the current 31,900 yen to 56,000 yen, and JAL’s from 29,000 yen to 56,000 yen. Both companies have also raised the fuel surcharge cap to 59,000 yen. [TV Asahi NEWS]
