The One about Nakano Shigeru’s “Uniconicorn” in Shinjuku (1993)

If you are in Shinjuku, in the Kabukicho area, you will discover an interesting statue right in front of the Miyako Kenko Plaza Hygeia.

A spin off the “unicorn”, it’s called “Uniconicorn” by its award winning sculptor Nakano Shigeru back in 1993.  The sculpture would eventually be remade and become part of his oeuvre for his popular work as part of his “1995 Shigeru Nakano Terracotta Exhibition”.

The sculpture features two children and between them, a small robot on top of a mule.  It’s quite unique and creative, but something you don’t expect to see in Kabukicho of all places.

But you can find the sculpture right in front of Miyako Kenko Plaza Hygeia.  It’s a big building that is utilized by the Tokyo Metropolitan Hospital Organization, Shinjuku Multicultural Plaza , Tokyo Metropolitan Welfare and Health Foundation, Tokyo Metropolitan Health and Medical Information and Tokyo Metropolitan Park Association to name a few.

As for Nakano, he continually has his solo exhibitions, with the last being his 2021 solo exhibition, “Twilight”.
