The One about Day 56 of my Holiday Film Marathon for 2022: A Christmas in New York (2017)

If the film was named something else, I would have been less salty towards this film.  But the fact that this is a Christmas film and the final holiday film that I would be watching for 2022, it was probably my least favorite holiday film that I’ve watched (and I have watched 56 consecutive holiday films already).

In the vein of LOVE ACTUALLY, the story follows six different couples in a posh Manhattan hotel over the course of one night just before Christmas.

For today’s holiday film review, I end my holiday marathon with “A Christmas in New York”, a holiday film released back in 2017.

it is not a holiday film that will make you feel the Christmas spirit, in fact, the film may make you feel fooled that you were watching a film with the holiday spirit but you are left with stories that may leave you feeling a bitter taste in your mouth.

So, what is “A Christmas in New York” about?  Unfortunately, it’s not much of a Christmas film but more about six different couples staying at a Manhattan hotel on Christmas Eve.

For one couple, you have Susan Clark (portrayed by Jaime Ray Newman) who leaves her family (a husband who is in a funk and needs to find work and her child) to have a sexual affair with Ben Haney (portrayed by Ross McCall) at the hotel.

You have Courtney Chen (portrayed by Linda Park) meeting up with her ex-husband, Sam Martin (portrayed by Jamie Bamber), who see each other for the first time in many years.

Katherine Taylor (portrayed by Tracie Thorns) who is in a relationship with Jasmine Taylor (potrayed by Jasika Nicole) and while the two are in love, Jasmine wants a baby, but Katherine really doesn’t.  And because they feel differently, will their relationship end?

Jose (portrayed by Josue Aguirre) is a a really good guy who has loved Gabriela Santos (portrayed by Catherine Toribio) but because she tends to date bad boys.  Gabriela’s boyfriend was caught with another girl and Jose wants to be there for Gabriela during this tough time.

Bob Burgess (portrayed by Richard Herd) wants to spend a Christmas Eve with his wife Irene (portrayed by Lee Meriwether) and both have been married for a very long time and continue their romance even later in their life.

Jack Livingston (portrayed by Christopher Backus) is a singer and is asked to go on tour, but Jack has been on the road, away from the people he cares about and taking on another tour, he needs to discover what is important in his life.

As mentioned, as a regular film about six different couples, I found the film OK, but when you make it a Christmas film, “A Christmas in New York” is more about a film about different kinds of love.

And as a person who enjoyed “Love Actually” and “heroes in love” and films that touch upon that concept, I do enjoy them, but what ruins this film is the infidelity.

Sure, it happens, but for one of the couples, Susan Clark, a hardworking woman having an affair with another man, to discover, “oh, I hate my marriage, I’m divorcing him and leaving him and my child during the holidays to have sex with another guy”, this really put me on a downer as watching sexual affairs in a Christmas movie, should be a no-no.

And the story about Courtney Chen and her ex-husband reuniting, but him trying to get answers of why their relationship ended and again, we get into another sexual affair situation and I was just feeling, “A Christmas in New York” made me feel that this film was not what I wanted to see during the holidays.

Again, if it was named something else, I would have been less salty towards this film.  But the fact that this is a Christmas film and the final holiday film that I would be watching for 2022, it was probably my least favorite holiday film that I’ve watched (and I have watched 56 consecutive holiday films already).
