One of Hawaii’s popular reggae groups is the band Kolohe Kai.

Fronted by lead vocalist and songwriter Roman De Peralta, the band also includes Jasmine Moikeha (vocalist), Kolomona Ku (keyboards/saxophone), Luke Daddario (drummer), Imua Garza (guitar) and Kahale Morales (bass guitar).

The name of the band was inspired by Roman De Peralta, who surfed and being “Kolohe” (rascal) when he was younger by his family because of his personality and “Kai” means water.

And in 2010, the band had eight members consisting of friends who graduated from high school and before that when they were attending high school, the band was formed when these classmates taking a Polynesian music class inspired them to create their own band.

And what sets them apart from other island reggae groups is that the band promotes positive songs and being raised with strong family values, it’s the direction the band chose and has led to a strong fan following.

In fact, with the popularity of their debut album and Roman De Peralta even being called the “Justin Bieber of Hawaii”, he turned down a deal from a major record label.  For Kolohe Kai, their roots are in Hawaii and live a simple life and have a life where he can continue to surf.

His decision to do so reminded me of a soul surfer who chooses to surf because they love it and had no interest in surfing competitively.  Kolohe Kai is a band that chose to deliver the aloha spirit in the way they want, keeping close to their ohana (family) and have fun while doing it.  At their own pace.

And they haven’t changed or wavered, they still continue to do this more than ten years later.

I have personally watched this band grow throughout the years from the release of “This is the Life” in 2009 through their latest 2022 album “Hazel Eyes” and we have seen the group grow and mature through the years.

The band has won awards (their 2019 album “Summer to Winter” won the Island Music Awards “Reggae Album of the Year” and in 2013, won “Reggae Album of the Year” at the prestigious Na Hoku Hano Hano Awards for “Paradise”), toured in countries around the world, starting a ukulele school and is one of the top YouTube streamers in Hawaii.

But back in in February 2020, the band just started their 10th anniversary tour and as you know, by March 2020, COVID-19 pretty much affected the world and for Kolohe Kai, the tour was cut short.

If there was a major positive of the pandemic break, it gave time for De Peralta the time to create music during quarantine, the band would create new songs, performing on virtual shows and made the best of their time but also giving back to their fans.

And also for De Peralta, getting engaged and marrying his true love, Midori Bikinis model, Katarina.

As mentioned, this band brings positivity.  Their Instagram page during the pandemic was about positivity, as their music has been throughout the years.

And while the band had their tour derailed a bit due to the pandemic, they continued on and were able to record and put together a 10th Anniversary Live Album.

It was the positive aloha vibe that many people have craved, as Hawaii had been affected with the year of lockdown and people were getting back to a new normal.  And for Kolohe Kai fans who couldn’t make it to a concert and those who were able to prior to the pandemic, this was a positive gift for their fans.

So, you are getting eleven tracks from albums “This is the Life” through “Summer to Winter” and the best part about it is that you get to hear the energetic fans screaming and cheering and singing a long to their songs.

That’s all you can hope for with a live album, awesome music and a supportive and cheerful fan base.
