The One about “The Sailing Bible: The Complete Guide for All Sailors from Novice to Expert”

When it comes to sailing, there is one book that is comprehensive, easy to read and recommended and that is “The Sailing Bible: The Complete Guide for All Sailors from Novice to Expert” by Jeremy Evans, Pat Manley and Barrie Smith.

The book is wonderful with a lot of information for beginners to advanced.

I have an interest in sailing and would like to go through the training but I looked to this book to read and learn more about sailing and to absorb as much as I can.

The book is broken down in the following categories:

  • Starting Out – Learn of what is a dinghy?  Keelboat?  Multihull? Cruiser? And more.
  • Learning to Sail – Experiencing the wind, wind in your sails, steering with a rudder, sail trim, sailing maneuvers and more.
  • Dinghy Sailing – Why choose a catamaran?  What to wear?  Fiberglass vs. polyethylene, asymmetric spinnakers and skiffs, rigging a simple dinghy, rigging a twin-crew dinghy, rigging a catamaran, sailing to the wind, how to tack, jibe, capsize, too much wind and more.
  • Cruiser Sailing – Choosing a yacht, cruiser, what is inside a cruiser, mainsail, raising and setting a mainsale, sailing upwin, offwind, entering a marina, how a yacht is secure, leaving a marina, anchoring and more.
  • Navigation – Learning about navigation instruments, nautical chart, buoyage system, tides, GPS and more.
  • Weather – The effect of weather, airmass, high pressure systems, movement of weather systems, fog and more.
  • Maintenance – Refitting, hull and deck, mast, spars, rigging and sails, the engine, electrical, plumbing and more.
  • Safety at Sea – Planning for safety, safety equipment, collision avoidance, emergency procedures, first aid and more.

And what I love about this book is the many photos included.  For me, it’s helpful and more enjoyable, when a training book includes photos and illustrations.

If anything, this book is just amazing. There is a lot of informative topics to learn and if anything, for those planning to do the actual sailing training, would be familiar with a lot of the basics.

The latest book is the second edition which has been revised to include updated maps and charts and current information on GPS and other factors related to navigation.

It definitely is a comprehensive, enjoyable sailing book which is a great resource for those wanting to get into sailing and those who are currently sailing.

Recommended!
