The One about the Cherry Blossoms at Chidorigafuchi (Chidorigafuchi Green Way & Chidorigafuchi Park)

On the northwest side of the Imperial Palace is the moat (a deep ditch surrounding a castle, fort or town filled with water and used as a defense against attacks) known as Chidorigafuchi.

Chidorigafuchi was opened to the public in 1949.

During the last few days of March and first two weeks of April, many come to Chidorigafuchi for the cherry blossoms (day and night) and also rent a rowboat in one of Tokyo’s most scenic locations.

Most people see Chidorigafuchi through walking through a stroll area known as Chidorigafuchi Green Way and the closest station is Kudanshita Station.  While the other area that was close by is Chidorigafuchi Park which is closest to Hanzomon Station.

It’s also very crowded (not as crazy as Ueno Park) and the line to ride the rowboats are very busy even in the morning (price is about Y800 to ride the boats for a half hour).

Unlike Inokashira Park which is a huge park, this is more of a walkway around the water/moat area but there are hundreds of sakura trees planted and it’s known for the night time cherry blossom illumination ala Chiyoda Sakura Festival which starts on March 25th through April 5th.

If anything, Chidorigafuchi Green Way/Chidorigafuchi Park is one of the prime destinations to visit for the cherry blossoms.  And for sightseeing, Nippon Budokan, National Showa Memorial Museum, the National Museum of Modern Art Crafts and Yasukuni Shrine are nearby.
