TRAVEL GUIDE: The One about the Photo Ban in Kyoto Alleys

It has long been a problem for Kyoto residents, as tourism to Kyoto has led to unruly tourists and for those who live near Hanamikoji Street, an association of residents and shop owners in the Gion district have imposed a ban on photography effective on October 25th.

While the area is known for their traditional stone pavements, restaurants and tea houses, people have entered private property without permission.

In addition, it’s been challenging for the geisha and maiko who have had tourists trying to get pictures of them (as they are trying to get to work).

Please note that people will be fined Y10,000 for taking photos in private alleys without permission, so keep a look out for signs that say no photography allowed!
