I’m often asked what is the best burger in Tokyo?

Everyone has their opinion as it’s subjective but the top 10 that I recommend are:

  • Authentic
  • Henry’s Burger Akihabara
  • Fire House
  • BLACOWS
  • Hungry Heaven Meguro
  • Chatty Chatty
  • Munch’s Burgers Shack
  • Gori Gori Burger Taproom
  • Burger Mania Ebisu
  • The Great Burger Harajuku/The Great Burger Ebisu

Please note that there are so many burger places I have yet to try but because I try not to eat many burgers, let alone bread…it kind of puts a damper on doing an all out burger foodie tour.

In April 2018, Metropolis Magazine did a Burger Issue (Free download here) and their picks were:

  • The Great Burger Stand Shibuya
  • Henry’s Burger Akihabara
  • Munch’s Burger Shack

Metropolis Japan, followed up again in April 2019 (which you can download for free here).

For the most part, the list is almost identical but they removed Crista, Good Town Bakehouse, Henry’s Burger Akihabara, Munch’s Burger Shack, The Oak Door and Ruby Jack’s.  They added three more to the list:

  • BeBu in Toranomon
  • Burger Mania in Ebisu
  • Jack37Burger in Bakurocho

Now, It’s important to emphasize that when the discussion of burger is discussed, this is not your typical under $5 burger that you can have at a fast food restaurant, nor is it the $10 diner burger either. In fact, expect to pay around Y1,400-Y1,500 average and that’s not including a drink.

In Japan, burger making is gourmet, includes toppings that one will sometimes never see in the US and as for the beef, sometimes it takes the best wagyu, thus some may be paying the premium.

Otherwise, there are cheaper burgers, where America, we have enough cattle to supply burger chains with 100% American beef, Japanese wagyu is on the expensive side and not everyone can afford it, so most of the time you’ll find places who use kokyagu (non-wagyu) which tends to be imported beef from Australia.

There are two burger issues I’m going to refer to, one is Popeye’s Burger issue from September 2018 and the Tokyo Premium Burger mook. This first part will focus on Popeye Magazine’s recommendations (not all of them), the second part will be what is featured on the Tokyo Premium Burger Mook and the third part, will be dedicated for vegan burgers!
