There are multiple ways to catch crabs, from chicken to string, crab traps, bait clips, you name it.

Now I recommend to getting a net which would help in making sure no crabs are lost once you pull that line and also check your states, county or province rules.
For example, in California, the Dungeness Crab Rules are 10 daily and must be 5 3/4 across the shortest distance through the body, while rock crab, you can catch 35 daily and the minimum size is four inches, so the ruler is enough as it’s 7.98 inches long for measurements.
But overall, these are inexpensive crab throw lines that adults and even children learning to catch crabs can easily pickup and learn.
