Large cherry blossoms in full bloom! Giant cherry salmon in Hokkaido
This time, we’ll be targeting cherry salmon in Hokkaido.

The cherry salmon is the anadromous form of the masu salmon. Among the masu salmon born in rivers, those that migrate to the sea where food is abundant and grow large are called cherry salmon.

Cherry salmon that have grown in the ocean eventually return to the river where they were born to spawn. Targeting them at this point is the basic principle of cherry salmon fishing. However, since fishing for salmon and trout in rivers is prohibited in Hokkaido, anglers target cherry salmon that are in the ocean before their upstream migration.

The angler is Hiroyuki Sato, a resident of Hokkaido who has a deep love for cherry salmon fishing. He is a veteran with 30 years of experience in the field.

On the first day, Sato arrived at the rocky shore of Kumaishi on the Oshima Peninsula. He began fishing at dusk.

“They’ve been chasing us!”

Right at the start, I saw a fish chasing my lure. Was it a cherry salmon?

Immediately afterwards…

“Oh! It ate it! I knew it was there!”

“This must be a cherry salmon!”

I got a bite just 30 minutes after starting to fish!

What was pulled up was a beautiful fish with shimmering silver scales—the prized cherry salmon!

“Isn’t that amazing! I’m so surprised!”

Furthermore, we got an unprecedentedly big win…

“It’s huge!”

The drag screams, and the rod bends into a large arc!

Enjoy this 30-minute program showcasing the allure of cherry salmon against the backdrop of Hokkaido’s magnificent natural scenery!
