Tenryu is a well-known Japanese manufacturer of fishing rods, golf shafts and other products.
Based in Iida City, Nagano Prefecture, the history of the company begins in 1961 as Shiozawa Manufacturing Co, Ltd. where the company produced hexagonal bamboo fishing rods. By 1963, the company then ventured into fiberglass fishing rods and in 1975, with polyester fishing rods and in 1978, carbon rods.
By 1990, the company reorganized and became Tenryu Co., Ltd.
It is one of the few long-established manufacturers of fishing rod blanks and golf shafts in Japan. They specialize in creating flexible graphite rods using scrim containing 10-30% glass fiber, and rods using GSI Creos carbon nanotubes.
As one of the first Japanese manufacturers to expand overseas, in 1970 it began producing Speedsticks for Luciel de Rey of the United States. Later, it produced rods for Shakespeare, and also manufactured rods for Kencor Sports Inc. It also imported reels for Vanstaal.
