A JR East limited express train has been classified as a serious incident after a door opened while the train was in motion.
According to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, at around 2 p.m. the day before yesterday, the “Kaiji” limited express train, bound for Shinjuku from Kofu, made an emergency stop as it passed through Hatsukari Station in Otsuki City, Yamanashi Prefecture, when a display indicating an open door appeared on the driver’s cab monitor.
Upon inspection, it was found that the door on the left side in the direction of travel was open, but fortunately, none of the approximately 250 passengers and crew members were injured. The Japan Transport Safety Board has designated this as a “serious incident” that could have led to an accident and will dispatch two accident investigators to investigate the cause.
