The One about Day 13 of my Holiday Film Marathon for 2022: 2nd Chance for Christmas (2019)

If you are wanting to watch a Christmas film that is not so sugary sweet and full of “happy”, “2nd Chance For Christmas” is one of those films that you want people to watch and self-reflect on their lives and how they treat people. It has a positive message and if anything, I was entertained.

A popular, young singer does not like Christmas. Just like Scrooge in A Christmas Carol, she’s visited by the ghosts of Christmas past, present and future.

I recently had a chance to watch the direct-to-video holiday film, “2nd Chance for Christmas” directed by Christopher Ray (producer for “Assault on VA-33”, “The Bay”, “Minutes to Midnight”) and written by Danny Max (“I love that for you”) and Scott Thomas Reynolds (“Assault on VA-33”).

The film stars Brittany Underwood (“One Life to Live”, “The Final Rose”, “The Goldbergs”, “Hollywood Heights”), Tara Reid (“Americna Pie”, “The Big Lebowski”, “National Lampoon’s Van Wilder”), Vivica A. Fox (“Independence Day”, “Kill Bill Vol. 1”, “Batman & Robin”), Jim O’Heir (“Smothered by Motehrs”, “Bad Times at the El Roy”, “Logan Lucky”), Mark McGrath (“Scooby-Do”, “Wild Things”, “The Sweetest Thing”), Mark Christopher Lawrence (“K-PAX”, “$TACK$”), Jonathan Lipnicki (“Jerry Maguire”, “Stuart Little”), Kristos Andrews (“Survive the Game”, “The Bay”, “The Last Whistle”) and former ECW/WWE superstar, Rob Van Dam.

The film revolves around popular singer Chance Love (portrayed by Brittany Underwood).  A person who dislikes Christmas, inconsiderate to others, very cold to those close to her, doesn’t care much about her fans and is a self-entitled person.

Her mother Monica (portrayed by Tara Reid) knows her daughter is difficult, Brian (portrayed by Kristos Andrews) is a guy she dated before she was a star who has become her assistant has worked in trying to give her a positive image, while Cory (portrayed by Jonathan Lipnicki) is her agent who is disappointed by his client’s behavior.

One day while at home, she is visited by the ghosts of Christmas past who try to show how Chance of how badly she has treated others and how her actions have impacted people who work hard for her and are close to her.

For the most part, this is a modern adaptation of “A Christmas Carol” and I think it’s a kind of film that many young people can identify with as it deals with self-entitled popstars, which our world unfortunately has quite a few.

While I grew up with watching numerous adaptations of “A Christmas Carol” which pretty much tries to stick with the original story and a poor family, in the case of “2nd Chance For Christmas”, so in a way I like how this film shows a person who is cold and bitter, starting to realize how her greedy actions have affected people who really tried to help her.

In a way, I enjoyed this Christmas special for a few things.  For one, it’s not like a Christmas telefilm that is typically happy and sweet.  In the case of “2nd Chance For Christmas”, it was a film where you pretty much are disgusted by the behavior of the film’s protagonist and in a way, there is a part of you who is happy to see the ghosts of Christmas past really give it to her.

But you have to give Brittany Underwood some props for having to portray various emotions, from the pop diva to the person who sees herself down and out.

And you get to see a few people that you may recognize such as Tara Reid playing Chance’s mother, Vivica A. Fox as Death, a grown up Jonathan Lipnicki as Chance’s agent and even former pro wrestler Rob Van Damn as an actor (play Chance’s chauffeur).

But for the most part, if you are wanting to watch a Christmas film that is not so sugary sweet and full of “happy”, “2nd Chance For Christmas” is one of those films that you want people to watch and self-reflect on their lives and how they treat people. It has a positive message and if anything, I was entertained.
