When her on-air partner decides to depart America’s favorite morning show, Veronika Daniels announces that she will be choosing her new co-host from a handful of candidates that includes Charlie Fisher, a local NY newscaster who is the son of a broadcasting legend. However, when Emily Morgan, a human interest reporter for the local Connecticut station, makes an impassioned on-air plea to be considered for the job, the game changes for everyone as video of Emily’s declaration goes viral and the network brass decide to put her in the running. Veronika delights in the healthy competition she sees brewing, and encourages the candidates to bring their A game in the segments and stories they do between now and the Christmas Day Telethon, when she will announce her choice. As the competition narrows, and it becomes clear that either Charlie or Emily are going to get the job, they begin to rediscover a spark between them that started long ago. Starring Dean Cain, Melissa Joan Hart and Jackée Harry.
For my latest holiday telefilm, which is day 16 of my holiday film marathon, I am checking out the Hartbreak Films produced telefilm “Broadcasting Christmas”.
For those who read my past reviews, Hartbreak Films, owned by actress Melissa Joan Hart and mother, long-time producer Paula Hart, produce one of the best Christmas films for the Hallmark Channel and Lifetime Television. And one of the earlier films from the Hart’s is the 2016 Hallmark Channel telefilm “Broadcast Christmas”.
Directed by Peter Sullivan and written by Topher Pane (and based on a story by Michael Varrati), “Broadcasting Christmas” stars Paula Hart (“Clarissa Explains It All”, “Sabrina the Teenage Witch”, “Melissa & Joey”), Dean Cain (“Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman”, “Out of Time”, “Rat Race”), Cynthia Gibb (“Fame”, “Death Warrant”, “Salvador”) Jackee Harry (“227”, “Sister Sister”), Richard Kline (“Three’s Company”) and more.
And you can’t go wrong with a holiday film which stars Melissa Joan Hart and also actress Cynthia Gibb who has been doing holiday films since 1996.
“Broadcasting Christmas” revolves around two news anchors, Emily Morgan (portrayed by Melissa Joan Hart) and Charlie Fisher (portrayed by Dean Cain).
For Emily, she works at a smaller television network covering local news, while Charlie Fisher works in New York doing the evening news for a major network.
The two are also familiar with each other as they used to be a couple, but when both were up for promotion of the New York job, Charlie took the New York job and invited Emily to go up with her, but she decided to stay at home for her career and the two haven’t spoken since then.
But Charlie l earns from his producer Patrice Montgomery (portrayed by Cynthia Gibb) that the popular morning news show hosted by Veronika Daniels (portrayed by Jackee Harry) is looking for a new co-host and Charlie is in the running to be a co-host.
But when Emily finds out, during a live news broadcast, Emily makes a plea to be among one of the competitor’s for the co-host job and the video goes viral on social media that the network adds Emily to be in the running with others and will appear in rotating morning shows during the holiday season.
And now Charlie and Emily must compete once again for a job, and both are determined in winning it. But while the two spend more time together, will it rekindle their romance that was lost?
After watching “Broadcasting Christmas”, once again, I was reminded how awesome Hartbreak Films holiday films are.
One thing that I love about the films is that they have solid production, shot in different locations, Christmas spirit throughout the film and of course, holiday magic!
In the case of this film, we have two competitive news anchors and former lovers who are vying for the co-anchor spot for a major Christmas news show. Melissa Joan Hart and Dean Cain have amazing chemistry.
But I also feel the film is boostened by the appearance of Cynthia Gibb, who plays the role of the show’s producer. And also a friend who went to college with both of the protagonists. I kind of look at Cynthia Gibb and Melissa Joan Hart as Christmas Queens, as they have appeared on so many wonderful holiday telefilms and you can’t go wrong with these films.
I also loved seeing the appearance of familiar faces such as “227” and “Sister Sister” actress Jackee Harry and “Three’s Company” actor Richard Kline in this romantic comedy as well.
Overall, one of the better Hallmark Channel holiday romantic comedy telefilms and “Broadcasting Christmas” is highly recommended!
