Among the Hawaiian singers who would be recognized worldwide post-humously, it would be Israel Kamakawiwo’ole a.k.a. IZ.
Known for his worldwide hit “Somewhere Over the Rainbow”, in Hawaii, IZ was known not just being a singer/songwriter but also as a Hawaiian sovereignty activist and his song “Hawai’i ’78” is one of those songs that remain popular among generations of locals and has inspired many.
Before IZ became a solo artist, IZ was part of the group Makaha Sons of Ni’ihau during the mid-70s.
In 1990, IZ released his first solo album “Ka ‘Ano’i” and won many music awards. His album “Facing Future” debuted at #2
IZ passed away in 1997 due to health problems at the age of 38 and many mourned his death. The Hawaiian flag flew at half-staff and thousands of fans attended his funeral and his two videos have collectively received over a billion views on YouTube (as of July 2020).
And his music is enjoyed and loved worldwide.
His album “Iz in Concert: The Man and His Music” are recordings from 1993-1997. It’s important to note that you’re not going to find his global hit “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” or “What a Wonderful World” as those songs became popular after his death but if you liked the songs from his albums “Ka `Ano’i” (1990), “Facing Future” (1993), “E Ala E” (1995) and “N Dis Life” (1996), then you will no doubt enjoy this live album featuring performances of wonderful songs such as “E Ala E”, “White Sandy Beach”, “Hawai’i ’78”, “E Ku’u Morning Dew” and many more.
And it’s not all music, there are moments where IZ makes the audience laugh by telling a jokes (the live does a great job of showcasing his humor).
The music sounds great digitally, featuring IZ, Mel Amina (guitar), Analu Aina (bass), Michael Muldoon (percussion), Gaylord Holomalia (keyboards and musical director).
This is simply a wonderful live album.Loved all 16 tracks and overall recording is great!
Israel “IZ” Kamakawiwo’ole’s live album titled “Iz in Concert: The Man and His Music” is highly recommended!
