A fishing tournament aimed at eradicating the invasive fish species “black bass” was held at Lake Megami in Tateshina Town.

The lake’s water level is currently low, and this is having an impact. Fishing is normally prohibited at Lake Megami, but a fishing tournament will be held for one month starting on the 30th. The purpose is to catch and eradicate the black bass, a designated invasive species whose numbers have increased and are causing problems. This is the first time the tournament has been held since 2024, but there has been a change…

■From Nagawa Town: “Two years ago, we had a good catch in this spot, so we were excited and thought, ‘Okay, let’s aim for that spot,’ but when we got there, it was like, ‘Is there no water?'” The lake’s water level has dropped significantly, possibly due to the lack of rain, and tourist boats have had to be closed. Along with eradicating the invasive species, there are also hopes for the water level to recover.
