The One about JR East fares increasing today!

JR East raised fares on its conventional lines, including the Yamanote Line, starting on the 14th.

Users commented: “Fare increases? It’ll be harder to travel freely now.” “Travel is a necessary expense, so we’ll have to cut back elsewhere.” “I definitely should have changed my commuter pass yesterday.”

JR East raised both regular and commuter fares from the first train of the day. The increases apply to all areas within its service area. On lines primarily in the Tokyo metropolitan area, the initial fare will increase by 10 yen to 160 yen, and the Yamanote Line from Tokyo to Shinjuku will increase by 50 yen to 260 yen.

This is the first comprehensive fare increase by JR East since its privatization from the former Japanese National Railways approximately 40 years ago.
