The One about Japanese Food Trucks: Pommes Prost

When it comes to Japanese food trucks, there are a good number that have been popping up. Back in 2015, there was a growing number, but by 2019, it seemed that it doubled or tripled in the number of competing food trucks at events.

But I want to give a shout out to food trucks in Japan and for this post, I want to give a shout out to Pommes Prost. A food truck (kitchen car) which specializes in Belgian fries and original chicken rice and beef rice originating from Daikanyama (Note: the owner once ran a restaurant in Daikanyama).

The chef, owner Hoshikwa-san aka “Hossie” trained at famous Italian and French restaurants and he started a food truck which serves delicious meals. Especially if you want a good mix of chicken and beef with ochazuke rice (green tea over rice with savory toppings) and veggies, it’s a great place to visit. The Nagatanien Ochazuke with bonito sashimi was great!

As for the Belgian Fries, they are topped with their original premium sauce which is so “yum”! In fact, there are 10 types of original sauces but the most recommended are their two premium sauces: Fukuya Spilled Mentaiko Sauce and Tokaichi Brown Swiss Corned Beef & Cream Cheese Dip.

Other dips include their anchovy mayo, yuzu pepper mayo, sweet chili mayo, avocado & ketchup dips which are about 500 yen each.

Also, their potatoes change according to the season and they use 100% natural vegetable oil.

Btw, some may be wondering what are Belgian Fries or to be French about it, “pomme frites”.  Well, French Fries were not a French creation, it was a Belgian creation.  In Belgium, you will find frite stalls in many areas.  And how they became “French Fries”, they blame that on American servicemen who came to Belgium at the end of World War I and mislabeled the Belgian les frites as French Fries.

Thus Pommes Prost has “The Best of Frites” and “Truck Frites” on their food truck.

So, if you want to be hardcore about it, call it Belgian Frites.  In fact, if you hang out with the urban haute bourgeoisie, then stick to “Frites”.

If you are in Japan, most Japanese will just call it “potato”, “fried potato” or “potato fry” but because of the “r” and”l”, its easier for many to just say “potato”.

Anyway, at the time I saw the Pommes Prost food truck, they had a red food truck but I’ve noticed on their Instagram that they have a black food truck now.  But they still have their loyal followers and for the most part, I hope they will continue to rock it in 2004.

For more information, please keep checking on their schedule on Instagram.
