Every year, Game Wiki hosts polls for the best video game soundtracks, which many netizens who love Japanese game soundtracks vote.
For me, I like to use this as reference to find songs and soundtracks that I’ve not listened to before. But also interesting to see how the list changes, especially when new gamers start to phase out other gamers and you start to see soundtracks skewing towards more recent titles, and titles that were popular a decade ago, are less prominent. It’s part of life and appreciation for music and one can hope that newer gamers appreciate the older game music as well.
Of course, everything is all subjective, so if you disagree with the poll, it’s OK.
Being a huge FALCOM fan, I was excited by this poll! In 2013, the wiki held its 2nd Top 100 Falcom Songs featured 199 songs, I am only going to focus on the top 25 and translating the titles if needed.
PERSONAL OBSERVATIONS:
As a long time fan of Falcom games and the music from the sound team, Falcom Sound Team jdk, doing a Falcom music poll is tough. Why? Because they were the kings of video game music. While people recognize Final Fantasy music creators and SQUARE ENIX has pretty much been on the forefront of music for international fans with wonderful soundtracks from “Final Fantasy”, “Draqon Quest”, the “NIER” series, FALCOM was the top dog from the ’80s-2000s.
They had success and many releases and so many versions of their songs spanning many numerous decade, that it’s tough. Do you like the original midi? The arrange version? The Evolution version? The piano version? The symphony version? You name it, Falcom has released a ton of music and soundtracks. And also different incarnations of their games.
And I suspect, if they even try to do this poll again in 2024, it would be even tougher. But where would I see things differently, well for one, “Innocent Primeval Breaker” from “Ys VII” would be ranked higher. “Ys I & II Chronicles” version of “To Make the End of Battle” would be much higher. “Ys: The Oath in Felghana” song “A Searing Struggle” would be in the list. “Maybe It was Fated” from “The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky the 3rd” would be in the top. “Final Battle” from “Ys Complete” would be in the list. But these are a few examples.
But nevertheless, glad to see they did do a Falcom list and I wish they would do a more recent one. But this is for 2013 and for the most part, it’s a good poll!
