Ray gets Debra a really great present for Christmas so she’ll agree to let him go golfing.

As I wait for more holiday films to be made available and easily accessible (as I am reviewing this in advance), I am going to review a few Christmas TV episodes for now.

A Christmas episode that I am reviewing is from “Everybody Loves Raymond” season five, episode 11 titled “Christmas Present”.

In this episode, Ray Barone (portrayed by Ray Romano) and his brother Robert (portrayed by Brad Garrett) are planning a golfing trip at Myrtle Beach for a three day weekend. But he hasn’t told his wife, Debra (portrayed by Patricia Heaton).

When Robert tells Ray that he saw Debra shopping for an ugly tie for Christmas, Ray feels that because he bought her a bad gift, he will give her a great gift.

On the day of Christmas, it is revealed the ugly tie was for Robert (who suggested it to her) and she ends up buying Ray a DVD player (which was a new technology and expensive back in 2000). And he is shocked that it wasn’t an ugly tie.

When Ray’s father Frank (portrayed by Peter Boyle) tells him that he got an extravagant gift because perhaps Debra wants something.  And then Ray thinks it may be true, because why would his wife acting so nice?

So, what happens when Ray goes to Debra to tell him about the trip?  And question why she bought him a DVD player?

Which leads to Ray and Debra get into an argument on Christmas day.

“Everybody Loves Raymond” Christmas episode was hilarious because what started out as a beautiful day, turned to a major argument as Ray, who has low self esteem, he can’t understand why his wife would buy him such a nice gift.  She tries to explain to him that she did it for the kindness of her heart.  But Ray doesn’t believe it and believes there must be a reason. And needless to say, it starts to backfire on Ray.

Especially when Ray tells Debra that she doesn’t allow him to help her clean because it makes her feel superior to him.  What a bad argument?

Needless to say, a wonderful Christmas episode from a popular series during a time when popular, long existing sitcoms still existed.  Granted, there is so much more out there than broadcast television for people to watch and while Cable and Satellite channels existed, now we have free channels delivering so much content and of course, the popularity of YouTube and TikTok also captivating Americans.

Sitcoms still exist but the familiy-oriented sitcoms are not the same as before.  And perhaps that is why people are turning to digital streaming, in order to watch these classic sitcoms.

But for those looking for Christmas episodes, you can always expect “Everybody Loves Raymond” to deliver.
