The One about portable fan explosions in Japan due to improper use

I know I have a done a few reviews on portable fans, but there is a warning especially in Japan as there is a rise of people getting injured by their portable fans due to improper use.  So, it’s important to know a few things and at least have knowledge to prevent heatstroke.

The demand for portable fans is increasing due to the effects of the heat wave in Japan (Japan tends to have hot and humid weather during the summer – so, if you are traveling from another country, please prepare yourself due to the heat), but it is said that improper use can actually cause heatstroke.

One of the causes of heat stroke is that a portable fan dries sweat quickly, inhibiting body temperature regulation and making it easier for heat to build up.

Be careful when using a portable electric fan, as it traps heat in your body.

Avoid long-term use on days when the outside temperature exceeds 35°C.

Wet a cloth that dries quickly and wrap it around your neck.

Try to stay hydrated frequently.

In addition to heat stroke, portable fans can also damage the corneas of your eyes. Avoid direct wind blowing on your eyes. In addition, there is a possibility of the device exploding, so excessive use should be avoided.

According to an experiment conducted by the National Institute of Technology and Evaluation (NITE), if a portable electric fan that was damaged by a strong impact such as being dropped on the ground was used for a long time, it would explode.

Portable fans equipped with lithium-ion batteries may explode or catch fire if the inside of the battery is damaged.

According to NITE’s research, at least 45 such accidents will occur nationwide in the five years until 2022. If it received a strong impact, please stop using it immediately and consult the repair contact such as the manufacturer or distributor.

On the other hand, even though this portable fan is convenient, throwing it away as general waste that can lead to a fire. In order to prevent fires, it is important to dispose of products equipped with lithium-ion batteries according to the instructions of the local government, including how to sort them.

“Lithium-ion batteries”, which are compact and provide strong power, are installed in a wide range of devices such as smartphones, mobile batteries, electronic cigarettes and smart watches.

According to NITE, if you leave it for a long time in a high temperature place such as on the dashboard of a car, submerge it in water, or get water on it, it may cause abnormalities during use. And there are danger signs that lead to anomalies.

If you cannot charge the battery, it becomes hot while charging, the battery is swollen, or the power turns off unexpectedly, stop using it immediately and contact a repair center or properly dispose of it (contact your local government or where you purchased it to learn about disposal areas).

The demand for portable fans is increasing due to the effects of the heat wave, but it is said that improper use can actually cause heatstroke.
