When Becca’s (Vanessa Lachey) dog runs away on Christmas Eve, she must team up with her ex-boyfriend Max (Christopher Russell) to find him. As the pup leads the exes on an all-day-and-night search through their North Carolina hometown, they revisit people, places and things that remind them of the Christmas pasts they spent together.
The holiday film marathon continues and today’s film for day 33 is “Christmas Unleashed” which aired on Lifetime Television back in 2019.
Directed by Nimisha Mukerji (“65_RedRoses”, “Gabby Duran & The Unsittables”) and written by Sara Endsley (“The Young and the Restless”), and stars Vanessa Lachey (“Disaster Movie”, “Dads”), Christopher Russell (“Star Trek: Discovery”, “Land of the Dead”, “Flashpoint”), Jayne Eastwood (“My Big Fat Greek Wedding”, “Dawn of the Dead”), Bethany Brown (“The Flash”, “The 100”) and more.
The film revolves around successful lawyer Becca (portrayed by Vanessa Lachey) who has avoided going back home to Baynesville for the holidays for four years. In New York, Becca has kept herself busy with work and her family has been her dog, Henry. Henry is a smart dog that listens to Becca, brings her luggage for work and pretty much is always by her side when she’s home.
Becca decided to come back home to visit her Gram (portrayed by Jayne Eastwood) but she is still hesitant for some reason. And that reason is that when she was back home, her she had a long relationship with Max (portrayed by Christopher Russell). Both were a perfect couple but with Becca moving to New York to pursue her career in law and Max in his final year of vet school and wanting to stay home, the two decided to end their relationship.
On her first night back home, her Gram tells her to lock the front door with the latch as the door may not lock and open. And sure enough, when Becca wakes up, Henry is not there with her and she begins to panic.
Her Gram tells her the best person who has contacts is the local vet, her ex-boyfriend Max. And the two together, start to look for Henry, despite it being a bit uneasy for them to reunite in such circumstances.
And sure enough, we learn that Henry is important to both Becca and Max as the two first discovered Henry at the Christmas tree lot when he was a puppy and the two met each other and as their relationship blossomed, both treated Henry like parents.
And each time there is a Henry sighting in town, each sighting are locations that were key moments in the relationship of Becca and Max.
“Christmas Unleashed” is no doubt a different type of holiday film in that it’s a film that takes place in the present, but through the two protagonists looking for a dog that is special to them, their search makes them reminisce of their relationship from when they found the dog and how close and in love they both were to each other, but broke up due to distance. In this case, Becca going to New York to practice law and Max deciding to stay in Baynesville to become the local vet and run a dog shelter.
It’s a delightful, fun storyline as we see how Becca and Max first met each other and how their life was each year, with their dog Henry before splitting up. And now that Becca is back in Baynesville and both are looking for Henry, there is no doubt the two still care deeply for each other years later. But is it too late? Or will the holiday spirit through Henry, find a way to bring these two together once again?
Both Vanessa Lachey and Christopher Russell are holiday telefilm veterans and their chemistry together onscreen works just perfectly.
Overall, “Christmas Unleashed” is a delightful holiday film about true love that was lost and what happens when these two reunite four years later? This holiday telefilm is recommended!
