The One about 2MD: VR Football Unleashed Challengers Edition for the Oculus Quest 2 (and Quest/Rift/Rift S)

I have been playing 2MD VR Football Unleashed and the game allows me to be the Roger Staubach, Troy Aikman, Dak Prescott quarterback I dreamed to be, but of course, on VR.

Developed by Truant Pixel, the concept is quite easy, 2 minutes left in the game. Your team is behind by 6 or 13 points with under 2 minutes to play. As QB, can you score a touchdown in time to win the game? Can you develop plays for short or long bombs and create the drives needed to outsmart the defense?

Well, 2MD VR Football Unleashed is that! No it’s not a Madden-like football video game. It’s a VR football game and on the Oculus Quest 2, it’s all about being quarterback and winning the game with time dwindling down.

There is no playing defense, there is no kicking for a field goal. After each touchdown, you can earn bonus points by throwing footballs through hoops, passing to receiver and bumping up the score.

But while the concept may seem simple, as you progress from team after team, the teams you go up against get better and better. So, you are going to have to come up with a strategy to defeat these teams who cover your receivers and can intercept your passes.

While I had tracking issues with my throwing hand (the hand would show up in the wrong area), with adequate lighting and also removing the skin I had on my Oculus Touch controller (I’m right handed and took of the right skin), I was able to play the game much better. It’s also a good idea to restart your Oculus once in awhile.

What I would like to see in an update:

  • More teams – 8 unique teams are nice, 12 or 16 would be even better.
  • The ability to use your own music, by allowing to put MP3’s in the music folder for custom music would be awesome.  Having your own custom music can really make the game exciting.
  • Playoff mode – Create a random playoff league leading to the big game.
  • Elimination of the happy team ending and trophy even if you were not in first place.  Part of the thrill of winning the final game is earning the trophy.  Getting the trophy when you don’t deserve it, kind of feels worthless.  Sure, if the game is developed for children and the message is “everbody wins”, I can understand.  But in competition, especially football.  Winning the championship and earning that right to be champs is important.

JUDGMENT CALL:

I do enjoy this game and with current VR technology, it does get better every few years, when it comes to physics, graphics and how far you can take the technology.  It’s a fun game, not perfect by any means but its a game that has true potential, especially if the developers continue to update it.

Otherwise, this is not for those who are looking for realism, it’s not for those wanting a Madden-like football video game.  But its for those who love football and want to be a quarterback creating drives that lead to that come from behind win.

From coming up with strategies by developing your primary eight plays and then practicing until you get the throwing down and trying to find out how to beat those higher level teams.  Again, its sounds simple but it really is quite entertaining and fun, and heck, it’s a VR game where you also get a workout!

2MD VR Football Unleashed is recommended!  4 STARS!
