The silent killer for fish is ammonia.
From too much fish excrement, too much uneaten fish food and decomposed plants.
It’s one of the early things that I experienced and others experienced especially with koi or goldfish that are known for creating a lot of waste, thus its important to have a gravel vacuum and do water changes.
But you can have the normal test strips that check for GH (General Hardness), Nitrates, Nitrite, Chlorine, Carbonate and pH. But these do not check for Ammonia and thus its important to also have ammonia test strips.
