The One about Komeda’s Coffee

I’ve written about Moriva Coffee, Jonathan’s, Cafe Gusto and numerous other coffee shops, western style cafes in Japan.

But when it comes to large chains throughout Japan, Komeda’s Coffee is one, perhaps the largest?  With over 700 coffee shops in Japan, it goes to show why people love visiting the establishment.

Established back in 1968 in Nagoya, the philosophy of the company has been “our spirit of cherishing coffee, selecting beans from all over the world, providing an affordable variety of menus with a homemade feeling and “omotenashi” hospitality.

If anything, you know that when you go to a Komeda’s Coffee restaurant, you are going to get great coffee, affordable and delicious food and awesome customer service.

While I have been to Komeda Coffee numerous times throughout Japan, I figured it would be nice to spotlight them for this blog post and I visited the restaurant in Kawasaki, Kanagawa.

Everytime I have been to a Komeda’s Coffee, it has been clean and the interior has always been a western style of diner.

Hardworking cooks in the back, cashier in the front and in terms of people eating at the location, I always know it attracts travelers and also ex-pats.  It’s a popular place to get your breakfast and morning coffee.  It’s important to note that I never went to a Komeda’s Coffee for lunch or dinner.

So, let’s take a look at the menu!

If you order a coffee or any drink, they offer a toast set and for those who are not familiar with toast in Japan, their toast slices are larger and fluffier.  In the case of Komeda’s Cofee, they have a hard boiled egg, homemade egg salad spread or Nagoya’s famous Ogura-an.  This lasts until 11:00 a.m.

For me, I have to try the famous Nagoya Ogura-an and it was absolutely delicious!  Went very well with my equally delicious Komeda coffee (and yes, you can get cream to go with your coffee).

As for the coffee, Komeda’s Coffee has this to say about their coffee and I agree:

Our sign says “Komeda’s Coffee”, and coffee is our signature menu item.

Our coffee is a Komeda’s original blend, roasted and extracted from selected beans from all over the world.

We are able to provide the same tasty coffee every day at all Komeda’s Coffee shops due to our distribution system that extends all over Japan.

The same delicious Komeda’s Coffee blend can be tasted all over the country—a deep roast when taken black, and even easier to drink when balanced with sugar and rich cream.

Our unique heavy mugs are designed to prevent warmth and good flavor from dissipating over time.
We do all this to provide the perfect coffee to go with every customer’s “relaxation”.

But three pieces of toast, while delicious, for the sake of the blog post and to have something to last me for several hours as I had to head to a museum right after, let’s look into the morning menu even more.

The Shiro-Noir has become a signature menu item at Komeda’s coffee and it’s ice cream (soft cream in Japan) on top of crunchy on the outside, soft in the inside Danish.  You can get normal size or mini size.

You can also ask for their special soft cream or even try their coffee jelly (soft cream, bananas, coffee jelly).

In the end, I decided I wanted to try something different and I wanted to try their shrimp cutlet sandwich.  Literally, instead of tonkatsu, it’s all shrimp (which costs a lot in the US, so to have it in a sandwich in Japan, for the price, I’m all for it!).  The dressing is Thousand Island.

May it be the shrimp, tonkatsu, miso tonkatsu, the cutlet sandwiches are around 920 yen, egg or potato sandwiches are around 610 yen and chicken hot sandwich is about 880 yen.

If you or family/friends are picky eaters, they also offer hot dog, chili dog, pizza toast, Komeda’s special pizza, Komeda’s chicken, Komeda’s Gratin, beef stew and more!

I have to say, biting and tasting this shrimp cutlet sandwich was like heavenly.  You just don’t get these in the US but Komeda’s Coffee offers it and it has to be one of the best things that shrimp foodies need to try!  It’s that good!

Overall, Komeda’s Coffee is one of my favorite morning destinations when I’m outside of Tokyo.  I know I’m getting great food, great customer service and most of all, a memorable breakfast.

I highly recommend the restaurant!
