The One about Kusatsu Part 5: Kosenji (Outside Main temple grounds)

As you go to Kosenji’s main grounds, you will notice there are more pathways, may it be to the right of the temple or midway on the steps.

While the temple grounds are not huge, there are still numerous things to see around the area.

Here are photos of what you can find off the main path…

You’ll find many structures dedicated to famous poets.  There are two monuments dedicated to Issa Kobayashi, a great Haiku poet of the Edo era who was close friends with Rohaku Kuroiwa, a Haiku poet from Kusatsu and visited the location three times.  He left behind the “Account of the Road to Kusatsu” which describes his five day journey from the city of Edo (modern Tokyo).

With the temple grounds covered, it’s now time to get back down…
