Located a floor above Gorilla Coffee Shibuya is a pancake shop known as J.S. Pancake Cafe.
I’ve written about the popularity of pancakes in Japan and they are no doubt much different in terms of perception, look and taste when compared to the typical pancakes that we are accustomed in the U.S. with iHop and Denny’s.
For one, they use Japanese flour that makes their pancakes smooth and fluffy. They are not heavy and they offer a variety of dishes, many that are seasonal. So, each time you visit J.S. Pancake Cafe, it will no doubt be something different.
I visited the location back in December during the Christmas holiday as they were having their limited White Christmas promotional.
The restaurant is quaint, while it was not as packed when I ordered, it picked up quickly as more and more people started to visit during the lunch hour.
I ordered the White Chocolate and Cream Cheese Pancake as part of their White Christmas Limited Edition promotion.
For those who have never been to a Japanese pancake restaurant, one thing to know is that these pancakes are not quick to serve like fast food or iHop, their is a lot of work that goes into creating these fresh pancakes and designing them. So, expect to wait a while. So, bring a book or magazine along or just enjoy chatting with friends while you wait.
These pancakes were moist and fluffy, the white chocolate used was delicious and you can taste the cream cheese and strawberries. Together they tasted delicious. It was great combination with the pancake and while Y1380 may be a lot for a small pancake. I looked at it as something different, creative and delicious that I don’t eat all that much while I’m in Japan. So, I was willing to spend a bit more on a Christmas-themed pancake. So, with the food and beverage, I knew that it would come a little under Y2000.
And if you didn’t want to spend as much as I did, you can get a sweet pancake with any of the following items strawberry, banana, maple butter, blueberry cream cheese, chocolate, strawberry custard, lemon ricotta, caramel brownie for Y800. A Meal Pancake that comes with herb chicken and sausage, curry, avocado and salmon, raw ham and rucola, bacon and egg and more for Y1,000. And they also offer other extras from Y580 and up. While for drinks, you can get a lemonade, coffee, JS blended tea, juice, alcohol or more.
Overall, J.S. Pancake Cafe is a pretty awesome place to get your pancake fix and also for the fact that you can get dishes that come with pancake but will fill you up with other types dishes that suit your budget.
