The One about Hitachi Seaside Park Part 3: Sawada Spring Water Nature House

Continuing my coverage from Hitachi Seaside Park, I had a choice of which area to go…left or right and I ended up choosing “Sawada Spring Water Nature House”.

The area was created as a learning center to learn about the environment and the ecosystem of the vicinity.

Opened in March 26, 2015, one can learn about the rare plants and the animals that inhabit the area.

The Sawada Spring Water Nature House is actually pretty cool and it’s great for families and those who are interested in birds, insects and plants to see what is in the area.

I like the architecture of the building and the location of the learning facility.

The area provides a place for one to rest and also, I noticed a few people who are jogging the park, leaving their items before they went out running.  It goes to show the differences in Japan, where one can leave their clothing behind and run and then come back and not worry about things being stolen.

But once you go inside, that’s what I found fascinating.

I suppose that seeing butterflies and insects, or even birds was any surprise.  In fact, for insect fans, I could see how it would capture a lot of attention.   But for me, I was surprised to see the snake skin of two snakes from the vicinity?  Were they added when the place was built?  Or did nature seem to find a way for these snakes to end up in the area?

The Aodaisho (Japanese Rat Snake) is a common snake in Japan and live in trees and bushes.  They hibernate for 3-4 months during the winter and start mating int he s pring.    They priimarily eat rats, mice, frogs, birds and bird eggs.

The other is the Shimahebi (Japanese Striped Snake).  Similar to the Aodaisho, they prey on frogs, lizards, insects, rodens, birds and their eggs.

As the dunes are to the east of the park, it was interesting to see this diorama of how people lived in the dunes and how they got their water.

Overall, the Sawada Spring Water Nature House is another cool addition to Hitachi Seaside Park.  This is great for the children who want to learn what kind of plants, birds, insects are nearby but also for nature lovers in general who want to see what kind of life inhabit the area.
