The One about the OhO sunshine waterproof video sunglasses

From OhO sunshine comes their product the “OhO sunshine Waterproof Video Sunglasses”.

The glasses are polarized UV400 protection safety lenses that comes with a strap, two clear lenses but most importantly, 32GB built-in memory to record video and also take snapshots.

The video sunglasses are great for those who are outdoors as these sunglasses are waterproof, they are thick and looks to be durable.

First, let’s talk about the sunglasses themselves.  As the sunglasses are UV protected, the version I am reviewing is the grey polarized lens versions.  Oho does sell the video sunglasses with multiple lens, with the more vibrant/cool colors costing about $5 more.

The sunglasses are good for the most part, but noticed that it catches things that are not seen by the naked eye, for example, the rear window of my vehicle, you could actually see these blocks of where the window is heated.  While looking at the side window and mirror in my driving seat, not sure if it’s the tinting but you can see a rainbow effect.  Not too distracting but the sunglasses gets things that my other sunglasses don’t.  So, I found that interesting.

But the sunglasses do work great as sunglasses, so I’ll give a thumbs up for that.

As for shooting video, the camera could be seen in the middle of the sunglasses and while one should be respectful and use these to record positive activities, because there is no light indicator outside of the glasses, no one will know that the camera is on but the person wearing the sunglasses.  I think that was possibly the main worry that others who knew I was testing these sunglasses were asking.

While you have many people who will use these sunglasses for their active sport hobbies or for traveling and seeing the sights of the city or various landscapes, I know there are a few people who may use these sunglasses for nefarious reasons, especially trying to use them in “no camera” locations.

But hopefully the use of the OhO sunshine waterproof video sunglasses are more for positive uses.

The sunglasses are activated by a button on the right temple, you will feel it vibrate and a red light will turn on near the interior of the sunglasses but slightly to the left.  If you press the button, you can snap photos and a blue light to the right will show up.  Taking photos will not affect the video, which is a positive.

Using the USB cable, plug it into your Windows or Mac and it should discover the sunglasses and you will find your video and photo files.

For the most part, video records in 1080p which is very good (audio is clear as well).  The longer you shoot the files are split up into ten minute files, so you will find many files split up if you tend to shoot longer video, while photos are in their own folder.

The files are in Quicktime .mov format, but I use VLC, so I was able to open them up quite fine.

I had no problems with a Mac, Windows 7 or Windows 10 machine discovering the sunglasses.    So, it’s pretty much plug and play and the files are easily discovered.

The only thing is that the files are saved under a date that the sunglasses were developed, so you’ll get an older date than the actual date the footage was shot.

As for video quality, the video and photos are best done under lighted conditions.  Inside a room with not enough lighting, you will see a lot of low-light noise and as expected, video and photos don’t look all that great.

I actually took the sunglasses out driving during the day and also during sundown and noticed that during the later afternoon, sunlight up ahead made everything dark all around.  But away from sunlight, video was quite fine.

I did do a water test which worked, but not a complete submerge.  Others have and said their video sunglasses worked fine underwater.

But overall, the OhO sunshine waterproof video sunglasses worked very well.  Those who take part in active sports will no doubt enjoy using these glasses, especially as I ride my road bike and have a camera on my back light and tend to ride with my GoPro, having the sunglasses on captures everything I’m looking at.  So, it’s good to have my peace of mind that I’m capturing my ride.

The same for those who drive and use a webcam, no problems of using these sunglasses to capture your ride and if you don’t want to wear sunglasses, just pop out the lens and exchange them with the clear lens that comes with the sunglasses. In addition, you get a protective case, lens cleaning cloth which is a plus.

While I see positive uses, again, there are those who will use this for not so positive uses and that can be a bit scary, considering there is no light indicator on the outside that one is being recorded.

But I do like these OhO sunshine waterproof video sunglasses and the positive uses for it and I do recommend it!
