The U.S. Embassy in Tokyo cautions U.S. citizens that Typhoon Lan (currently situated east of the Philippines), could strengthen between Friday and Saturday as it passes east of the Philippines and Taiwan and may impact Japan this weekend. The official forecast from the Joint Typhoon Warning Center is that Typhoon Lan could reach super typhoon intensity by Friday — meaning its top winds will reach at least 150 mph. Typhoon Lan could make a close brush with Okinawa over the weekend, although the storm’s core — containing its most violent winds — are expected to pass just to its east. Locations from Okinawa northward in the Ryukyu Islands can still expect heavy rainfall and sustained winds over 40 mph with gusts reaching 80 mph beginning Saturday.
Typhoon Lan is then forecast to continue northward, tracking near or over eastern Honshu, and may pass dangerously close to the Greater Tokyo area Tuesday. Despite some weakening before reaching mainland Japan, Typhoon Lan is expected to be a powerful typhoon and has the potential to produce widespread flooding, destructive winds and mudslides. It is too soon to pinpoint Typhoon Lan’s exact location five days from now but the entirety of Japan should be alert and monitor the storm.
