Entertainment writer Alli Blakeman (Holly Deveaux) is assigned a story covering the anniversary of a classic Christmas movie in the small town where it was filmed. She meets a local theatre owner Brad (Drew Seeley).
A film about a hoilday film. Something you usually don’t see in a holiday telefilm, and enough for me for wanting to check out “Christmas Movie Magic”, a 2021 holiday telefilm which aired on Lifetime.
The film was directed by Robert Vaughn (“The Santa Suit”, “High-Rise Rescue”) and features a story by James S. Blakeman and Caitlin English and a script by Rickie Castaneda and Megan Hocking.
The film stars Holly Deveaux (“Shadowhunters”, “Future Man”, “Spun Out”), Drew Seeley (“Another Cinderella Story”, “One Tree Hill”), Jill Frappier (“Nurses”, “Hudson & Rex”, “Kim’s Convenience”), Jennifer Gibson (“Suits”, “A Dog’s Way Home”) and more.
“Christmas Movie Magic” begins with a scene from a holiday classic film “Christmas With You”. The film then fast forwards to the present where Ali Blakeman (portrayed by Holly Deveaux), the Travel and Entertainment journalist for “The Sentinel” is hoping to be promoted to become part of the news team. Her boss tells her that he will consider it if she can take on a holiday story and that is to go to the location where “Christmas with You” was filmed and write a story about it, as the film is celebrating its anniversary.
For Alli, she wants nothing more than to become a news journalist and this is her big break.
When she arrives, she meets the local theater owner Brad Westdale (portrayed by Drew Seeley) and his grandmother Margaret (portrayed by Jill Frappier), his sister Tracy (portrayed by Jennifer Gibson), his mother and niece.
And while she is trying to figure out what the story angle will be, she learns that Brad wants to make “Christmas with You”, a true holiday classic and wants people to enjoy it by watching it in the theater where “Christmas with You” was shot and filmed. It means a lot to him and the family who owns the classic theater.
And while he shows her to a framed musical piece from the film (which the song is a holiday classic Christmas song), she accidentally hits the frame and breaks it. But on the back of the musical sheet is a letter from the original actor written to someone named “D.W.”.
This leads to Alli and Brad to investigate who is D.W.? Meanwhile, everyone in town is curious about what story Alli will write of the film and the town.
I enjoyed this holiday telefilm as it was unique in the sense that it explored a popular holiday classic and through the research done by the protagonists, they learn so much more about the secrets of the film’s star and more!
It’s a romance comedy and while it’s not the best romance Christmas holiday film, it does feature an original story (granted the holiday journalist is a cliche but the story is very much different than any holiday telefilm that I’ve seen before) and I like how the film tries to showcase a classic theme of classic cinema and even dance.
I was definitely entertained! Definitely give “Christmas Movie Magic” a try!
