I have reviewed numerous golf club adapters for VR and in terms of the price, the Defanti VR Golf Club (GQ2) for the Meta Quest 2 is one of the highest priced golf club adapters in the market. But does high price mean best quality?
Let’s find out.
Upon looking at the golf club adapter, it’s no doubt different from any golf club adapter which I have seen. It has the carbon fiber holder on top, it is the first golf club adapter which I have tested with an actual extender, so you can get almost another foot and a really good rubber grip.
The controller also comes with a velcro strap to hold the buttons down. Other companies typically give a rubber band, but this is a good touch to add.
The controller easily fits on and one major plus is that the carbon fiber holder has a little notch to keep the controller locked in. It’s quite thin, but I look at this as a secondary support. The controller’s tie can be put through a small hole in the carbon holder to have additional support as well.
Both left and right controllers can be used and you are are provided with what looks like a silicone protective cover for the rings for extra durability and scratches.
With three layers of protection provide support for your controller, the extension and the carbon holder, you understand why this is priced much more than the others.
But does it make it better?
I found that the pin portion on top to lock the controller in the carbon fiber base is thin. If it was metal, then I would be more comfortable but it being plastic, I don’t know if overtime, it will wear or weaken. That is a major concern.
Granted, the wrist tie being wrapped through the opening slot is good.
But I felt the silicon ring covers is a good idea to give that extra sense of comfort of knowing that your controller is protected. Because replacing them is not cheap for $69 for just one controller.
But a problem that I had was something similar that I experienced with silicone skin protection for the controllers. That is the covering the sensors of the controller that the headset has a hard time detecting the signals.
And having that protection causing problems during my golf game was frustrating which you can see on this video.
So, why not ditch the silicone covers and just rely on the pin and the tie to hold the controller in place. You can if you want, but considering that holder is thinner than other golf club adapter brackets to hold the controller in place, if you swing hard, you can find yourself breaking something in your room or injuring someone. Granted, that’s where the tie would hopefully hold the controller in place as a backup, so that won’t happen.
Personally, I loved the features of what was listed and promoted but if they were able to make the holder pin thicker, I would be more confident. If they were able to add holes to the silicone covering for that extra protection but also the headset and the controller’s sensor areas are not obscured, that would also be great. This would be a 5-star product. But for now, I can’t give it five stars.
But from my experience alone using this adapter, while on paper, it seems like a solid deal, execution-wise, for the protection of your Quest 2 controller, your surroundings and most importantly, also people who may be in direct contact of where you swing thinking they won’t be hit, there are other golf club adapters that do better in that category and are much cheaper.
The Defanti VR Golf Club (GQ2) for the Meta Quest 2 gets 3.5 stars!
