The One about Day 5 of my Holiday Film Marathon for 2021: Doctor Who Christmas Special – Last Christmas (2014)

While I won’t yet comment if this was the best Doctor Who Christmas special (as I have a few more to review during this holiday marathon), I was thoroughly entertained by this special and the fantastic acting performance of Peter Capaldi and Jenna Coleman (my favorite Doctor Who companion). I do recommend the Doctor Who 2014 Christmas Special – Last Christmas!

Doctor Who returns in an all new Christmas Special in which the Doctor and Clara face their Last Christmas. Trapped on an Arctic base and under attack from terrifying creatures, they find themselves calling for help from a familiar Christmas hero – Santa Claus (Nick Frost)!

While the next review is not necessarily a film, I am including this “Doctor Who” Christmas special as part of my Christmas Holiday Film marathon and this is for day five.

And as a “Doctor Who” fan, I know there are Christmas specials that I have yet to watch, so what better time than to do it now.

The 2014 special featuring Peter Capaldi as the Doctor and his companion Clara Oswald (portrayed by Jenna Coleman), is the tenth Christmas special since the show was revived back in 2005 and was directed by Steven Moffat and directed by Paul Wilmshurst.

The special is set on Christmas Eve and Clara is awakened by noise on top of her roof. When she goes outside to check, she sees Santa Claus (portrayed by Nick Frost) and two of his elves, while his reindeer are flying around.

As Clara tries to see if what she sees is the true Santa, the Doctor arrives to have Clara join him, while Santa tells the Doctor that he will need his help before the night is over.

We then see the North Pole base where four crew members are observing an infirmary. We then see the Doctor and Clara arrive in the infirmary and four alien who were seen laying on the infirmary beds, have no awakened. The Doctor tells Clara that these “Dream Crabs” read the visual input and one has to stop thinking about them or else they will try to take over one’s mind and devour a victim’s brains.

While the Doctor, Clara and the four crew members try to escape, a blast is then seen and out comes Santa and his two elves (along with toys) to the rescue.

It was then, we see the Doctor and Clara talking about Clara’s boyfriend Danny Pink, revealing to the Doctor that she lied about Danny coming back (Note: You’ll have to watch the 2014 season to know more about what happened).

Meanwhile, as everyone talks about the Dream Crabs, Clara goes out to fetch some tea.

But while walking alone, she sees broken glass under the table. While she goes to look, a Dream Crab comes form top and is seen above the table and Clara is seen screaming. When she wakes up, it’s Christmas Day and her boyfriend Danny is dressed up in a Santa Claus outfit.

While Clara is having a good time with Danny, the Doctor allows himself to be taken by the Dream Crab, so he can relay a message to Clara that she is in a dream, and she is dying. She needs to snap out of it quick!

And I will leave it at that, to not spoil the entire special.

But I will say that the special was quite interesting, as the storyline involves Christmas, dreams and for fans of Clara Oswald, to see her and Danny together again, even though it’s for this special. And of course, to see good ol’ Santa playing a major role in this special.

But this Christmas Special was no doubt part of the much loved season of Doctor Who featuring Peter Capaldi and Jenna Coleman and where acting, writing and overall direction was wonderful.
