Hurley was founded in 1979 by Bob Hurley as the company was known as Hurley Sufboards/International Pro Designs.
Bob was a well-known surfboard shaper in Southern California and was instrumental in licensing the US rights to Billabong (back then the company was an Australian surf brand) and creating Billabong USA in 1983.
With the success of Billabong, Bob and his team wanted to do things differently and while they made over $70 million in sales in America, the team decided not to renew the USA license for Billabong USA and instead, create Hurley International in 1999.
A few years later, Hurley International was sold to Nike Inc. and ran it from 2002-2019.
Nike sold Hurley to Bluestar Alliance LLC and the new owners are reportedly distancing themselves from sponsoring of surfing. John John Florence left Hurley and just a week ago announced that he is starting his own company Florence Marine X, launched alongside with…Bob Hurley.
Wow!
Anyway, I’m going to review the Hurley Phantom Sleep Hollow Boardshort. A boarshort with a classic look and stretchy fabrice with a 20″ outseam.
These shorts feature a drawcord at the waist, are made of recycled polyester (92%)/spandex (8%) and are machine washable.
Features an EZ fly closure and back patch pocket (velcro).
Unlike the photos, there are no black at the bottoms which was a bit of a surprise and a bummer. But everything else is correct as see on the photo with the black stripe on the side and the Hurley logos on the side left and the back pocket.
I dig the brown waist and pocket closure and for the most part, the design of what looks like water splashes or mountains (depending on how you interpret the art, it’s all good).
Why it’s called “Sleep Hollow”… I don’t know? But I do dig these shorts and they come in different colors.
I was hesitating because I was hoping these shorts were not going to look like mint green, and fortunately it’s more like a tannish color, unless I’m going colorblind because I don’t see much green.
But overall, I do dig the Hurley Phantom Sleep Hollow Boardshorts.
