For those who are traveling to Enoshima and traveling back from it, more than likely that you will be riding on the Shonan Monorail and will be arriving at Shonan-Enoshima Station.
Shonan Monorail is a railway company operated by the Monorail Enoshima Line and Shonan-Enoshima Station is located in Fujisawa City, Kanagawa Prefecture.
You can also take the Enoshima Electric Railway to Kamakura and take a train from Kamakura (which gives you access to trains back to Tokyo if needed).
The station opened back on July 1, 1971 (Showa 46) and the original plan was to build it near the coastline, but it was opposed by Enoshima Electric Railway and landowners. So, it was built inland.
In 1992, an automatic ticket-gate was installed, in 2012, it was updated and by 2018, elevators and PASMO use was introduced. But it was old, grey and lacked any vitality. So, the station went under major renovation in 2007.
By December 1, 2018, the new station building was completed and officially started operation.
But one of the big attractions to the new station is the “roof terrace” on the fifth floor. You can look all around and even see Mt. Fuji from the distance.
I find it convenient to take the Enoshima Line between Ofuna Station to Shonan-Enoshima Station. From Tokyo, I take a train to Ofuna Station which then you can take a line that takes you to Shonan-Enoshima and it’s very convenient.
Overall, it’s a pretty cool new station to visit. The terrace roof is cool but I didn’t stick around to see how things looked at night. But I was grateful to see Mt. Fuji from the terrace.
Otherwise, a cool and uncrowded station and also a station you will most likely visit if going to Enoshima.
