In 1960, Fujisawa Shashin Shokai was created and founded in the former town and ward of Yodobashi.
As the store changed its named to Yodobashi Camera Co., Ltd. in 1974. The first store would open in Shinjku Nishiguchi and 1/3 of all SLR cameras were sold at the Yodobashi camera store.
As the company would open their online store in 1998, the company’s mega store would open in Akihabara in 2005.
The store in Akihabara is eight stories tall, you can find the stores broken down into the type of things sold. While the eighth floor features restaurants.
The location definitely is packed, as many sales happen on a weekly basis, similar to the Fry’s stores in the U.S.
But because of its proximity to Akihabara station and the otaku popular areas, for those needing a new cell phone, laptop, tablet, DSLR and related accessories, video games, musical instruments, toys, outdoor products, baby products, tools and more, it’s no doubt a popular location to visit. And offers more than a local US electronics store, including Fry’s which I would no doubt find myself staying for hours checking out the electronics.
While Japan has its many electronic stores such as Bic Camera, Sofmap, Yamada Denki and more, the Yodobashi stores are huge and a perfect destination for those looking for newer electronics.
