As a person who owns numerous sartorial books, I wanted to give Jamie Ferguson’s “This Guy: Portraits of Modern Men’s Style” a try.
It’s pretty much a blind buy, not knowing what I would get, but that seems to be the case with sartorial books that I read.
This book is published by Hardie Grant Books and “This Guy: Portraits of Modern Men’s Style” is a book by photographer Jamie Ferguson featuring styles of men around the globe who possess enduring personal style.
From the vibrant tailoring of Italian entrepreneur Tommaso Capozzoli, to the laid-back look of New York designer Antonio Ciongoli, and the unique eye of the man behind Drake’s in London, Michael Hill. Featuring the styles of 20 inspiring men.
When it comes to style, the men featured each have their own distinct style, so for those who are just wanting photos of men in a variety of styles, there are books and magazines for that.
This one features an interview with the individual and their approach to style, and it’s of course, subjective to the individual and their taste in men’s fashion.
Tommaso Capozzoli, a clothing entrepreneur who is also a travel expert is no doubt a dapper individual; Adam Rogers who is a designer, photographer and creative director based in London, his style is more casual and similar to what my friends would wear in Los Angeles; Uchiyama Shoji is a Chief Buyer at United Arrows and has a casual/chic in a Euro/Nihon sense vs. the Ametora style.
You see a few who like to bring together a mix of sartorial with casual, mixing tailored suits with denim. But the person, aside from Capozolli and Italian creative director Gerardo Cavaliere that caught my attention in this book is elder Akamine Yukio, as fashion director in Tokyo.
Akamine is one of the most fashionable people in Tokyo and his brand the Incontro Co. Ltd., Akamine Royal Line ala men’s dandyism is for those who want luxury clothing woven based on the traditional archived fabrics from England and France. So, glad he was showcased as one of the men in this book.
But you do get a book featuring men who have various styles and for me that’s pretty cool and makes for a great coffee table book, as one can pick up the book and glance through various styles and a page of reading for each of the men featured.
Personally, I would like to see Jamie Ferguson continue this as a book series. As Jamie has more photos on his Instagram, there are no doubt many more stories to tell, more styles to be showcased and whether or not he decides to continue it, definitely support his work by following him on Instagram and checking out “This Guy: Portraits of Modern Men’s Style”.
