As Tobiccho is well-known for its shirasu-don, it’s also well-known for its market as it’s a place in Enoshima Island where people can purchase fresh shirasu, nori and other popular items.
So, before I continue with part two…let’s run through what I discussed from yesterday’s blog post about Tobiccho:
Shirasu is what people may know as whitebait, young, immature fish traveling together in the ocean and considered a delicacy in this region of Kanagawa.
Shirasu is consumed as raw, by boiling (shirasu) or as chirimen-jako (dried shirasu) and are usually juvenile sardines (ma-iwashi), juvenile anchovy (katakuchi-iwashi) or juvenile herring (urume-iwashi).
And the main dish that attracts people to Enoshima island is shirasu-don which is shirasu on white rice.
I’ve tried different restaurants in Enoshima Island but there is one restaurant that is famous for it and that is Tobiccho.
But it’s also popular for selling their popular Shirasu Korokke (the popular fried mash potato but instead of meat, it’s shirasu) and an item that others may want to try, which I know others may can’t fathom… shirasu ice cream.
I remember an episode of “Iron Chef America” and the chef’s had to create dishes made with a certain fish. And Chef Morimoto made fish ice cream, which of course, the judges had a hard time fathoming and eating but to their surprise it was good, but the thought still put them off.
Since you are going to be in Japan, if you are able to rid of those negative thoughts, just do it!
You can order vanilla, a mix of green tea/vanilla, all matcha green tea ice cream, mix of matcha/shirasu or all shirasu.
Of course, I’m going all the way in by ordering the shirasu ice cream!
It was absolutely delicious everyone! I think the milk flavor hid most of the fishiness but you can see the ice cream (which is gray) and shirasu on top. It was delicious! I’m serious!
Last but not least, there is something important I must bring up once again!
Remember my “Beware of the Hawks at Enoshima Island” blog post about not eating outdoors at Shonan Beach or Enoshima Island? There is a sign right in front of the register of Tobiccho.
I saw another incident with a guy from the US with his children purchasing ice cream. No one pays attention what is in the sky because you are fixated on the shops and finding places to eat straight ahead. And while his family was eating ice cream outside, a black kite hawk dive bombed on him. He manage to see it in time and was shocked and startled and of course, shouted a little profanity.
I explained to him about the sign and what happened was a hawk dive bombing to get his ice cream. I explained to him to be careful for the black kite hawks but fortunately for him, he moved out in the nick of time. Others are not so lucky and some unfortunately get hurt.
So, please “DO NOT EAT OUTSIDE”. If you are, immediately go under the a building roof area, a tree or something.
Just be careful as those black kite hawks are quite aware of the food stalls in front of Tobiccho and you’re literally a walking target if you walk and eat.
But overall, I have to say that my experience at Tobiccho, may it be for the shirasu-don, the korokke and ice cream were all positive and I can see why the location is quite popular!
As mentioned in yesterday’s post, if you are a seafood fan and are planning to visit Enoshima Island, this restaurant should be on your bucketlist!
