The One about the Japan Fish Certification Exam, a test for fish lovers in Japan, will be held from November 3rd to 9th, 2026!

The Japan Fish Certification Association (located in Koto-ku, Tokyo) will be holding the “2026 Japan Fish Certification ‘Totoken Online'” from November 3rd (Tue – holiday) to November 9th (Mon) of this year. [Web application deadline: October 20th (Tue) 12:00]

The Japan Fish Certification Exam (nicknamed “Totoken”), which was established in 2010 as a test of knowledge about seafood, aims to help people rediscover the charm of fish, which has nurtured the hearts and bodies of Japanese people, including the rich fish-eating culture and seasonal flavors of various regions throughout Japan, and to support delicious encounters with fish.

Following the COVID-19 pandemic, the program relaunched in 2022 as an “online certification exam.” Since its first run in 2010, 37,000 fish enthusiasts across Japan, spanning generations from preschoolers to those in their 80s, have taken on the challenge over the past 16 years.

As this will be the final year of the series, in order to expand the last opportunity to take the exam, we have set a one-week exam period for all levels: Level 3 (Beginner), Level 2 (Intermediate), and Level 1 (Advanced). The exams will be held online from home from 10:00 AM on November 3rd (Tuesday, holiday) to 12:00 PM on November 9th (Monday), which is “Good Fish Day”.

We hope that those who take the Japan Fish Certification Exam will become “storytellers of fish” in their homes, workplaces, schools, and dining establishments, and pass on the fish-eating culture of “Japan, the land of fish.”
