When it comes to catching carp, there are many carp spring rigs to purchase online but the best I have used is the Blacktail Kumho Carp Spring Rig (size 4).
For those not familiar with Kumho, they are a tackle shop in South Korea (while I am not sure if they are related to the tire company, they are a reputable company that makes hooks). Blacktail is a company that has the rights to sell Kumho hooks overseas.
So, what is this rig about?
The Blacktail Kumho Carp Spring Rig has a spring that you fill with bait and it has three hooks.
So, how do I use this spring rig?
I pretty much connect this to my fishing rod using on braid. I don’t need to cast super far when using the carp spring rig, as long as I can get within 50 yards at the river I go to, I’m good. So, I use a Yo-Zuri , Daiwa J-Braid x4 or Duel Hardcore braid that is typically over 50lb.
After connecting to my rod, you can use your carp bait (easy to make with breadcrumbs, corn and red jello) or you can purchase an awesome bait, known as wussy bait and I cover the spring and I tap and cover the hooks (do not put the hooks inside spring, keep them outside).
Some people like to make their bait around the spring to be bigger, I use about this much. Enough to cover the two hooks and sometimes I put corn on the third hook. But sometimes I just have all three hooks on the sides of the rig.
And cast the rig and just leave it on your rod holder (I use two rods, so I have to put rod bells to alert me when there is a bite).
But this rig works incredibly great but it’s important to have a net ready.
Are there any negatives about the Blacktail Kumho Carp Spring Rig?
Not really but you may want to put a split shot sinker on the bottom as the more you use the carp spring rig, the line will start to pull up and the hooks can pull up to the base, so will need to get a knot or a split shot sinker later as the rig can be reused but the lock that keeps the hooks free flowing will eventually start to be pulled by the top rope portion.
One that that I do recommend is when you are done fishing, there are a few things I would do:
a) Check your state and county’s fishing rules especially if your state allows for three hooks. Also, the use of bait.
b) The other thing is because it comes with three hooks, I use a piece of styrofoam (small rod-shaped styrofoam that you can find at Hobby Lobby) to attach the hooks, so they don’t get caught on your car’s upholstery.
c) Clean the springs and remove any of the bait that may be stuck. You may need to do this when you get home and run it through the sink or your garden hose attachment.
d) Have your pliers ready, because often the hooks will get caught on the fish mouth and you need to remove the hooks.
But I do like these Blacktail Kumho Carp Spring Rigs. They have that heavy center, weighted spring, black nickel coated hook and it’s literally the best spring rig I have tried!
