“Blooming” for the first time since the Meiji era leaves residents in a frenzy. Owner of the once-in-120-year flower, Toyokazu Taniuchio: “The flower has bloomed… I looked it up online and it’s a black bamboo flower. Normally, they bloom only once every 120 years. I’d like to ask a botanist who is knowledgeable about this kind of thing.” Hiroto Kawai, Deputy Director of Toyota City Nature Observation Forest: “It’s definitely a bamboo flower, a black bamboo. The last record was around 1908… It’s said to be roughly on a 120-year cycle.”

This is the first blooming since 1908, or Meiji 41. Almost no one has ever seen it before. Neighbor: “I’ve never seen anything like it, really… Wow, amazing.” Owner of the once-in-120-year flower, Toyokazu Taniuchio: “See, it’s blooming, right?” Neighbor: “It really is, amazing. You’ve shown us something rare. It’s good that you’ve lived a long life.” Owner of the once-in-120-year flower, Toyokazu Taniuchio: “It really is, it pays to live a long life.” The interval between bloomings is so long that research has not progressed, and there are many mysteries surrounding it.

Hiroto Kawai, Deputy Director of Toyota City Nature Observation Forest: “Unfortunately, once the flowers bloom, it takes 120 years for them to bloom again… We will be doing more research on that in the future.” [TV Asahi NEWS
