The One about Train Simulator: EWS Class 67 Loco Add-On (Train Simulator Classic)

For today’s review, I go back 14 years ago. The early years of “Train Simulator Classic” (ala “RailWorks 3: Train Simulator 2012”) and of course, since the release of DLC, there have been improvements to “Train Simulator Classic” and how developers are really trying to squeeze a lot out of a very old engine and for the most part, seeing impressive creations. While it’s sibling, “Train Simulator World” has now poised itself of getting the love and fanfare thanks to easier and forgiving gameplay and magnificent graphics.

With that being said, while TSW is popular for today’s graphic loving gamers, “Train Simulator Classic” still is the King. With many DLCs and community support, it’s still the world’s best train simulator. With that being said, “Train Simulator Classic” as it did in 2009 and to 2026, still remains a wonderful game that is unforgiving, challenging, long and frustrating because you can give your all, but in the end, while you may complete a scenario, doesn’t mean you will earn any points.

Before I get to my review, I am a train fan who travels worldwide to ride in trains, collects trains (N-Gage) and is passionate about train simulators and raised on “Densha de Go” and play many train games to this day. But with that being said, I am not the technical train fan who looks for perfection in depiction or sound. While there are some people who are hardcore about that. I am not that type of railfan.

Nor am I going to say, “purchase a weather packm sound pack or liveries” from another site. If you have the money to do so and the technical know how to do so, go for it! The beauty of simulators especially for trains and planes, you have that freedom thanks to its supportive community.

Now on to my review.

Train Simulator: EWS Class 67 Loco Add-On

The British Rail Class 67, a class of Bo-Bo diesel-electric locomotives built for the English Welsh & Scottish Railway (EWS) between 1999 and 2000 and with a total of 30 produced, this train is still in service today.

The trains were built by Alstom at Meinfesa in Valenica, Spain and featured drive components from General Motors’ Electro-Motive Division.

And the original intention of these trains were for one primary thing, for mail.  Yes, it was a train that was to be used primarily as a mail train, but a few years after these trains were built, EWS lost the Royal Mail mail train contract.  So, a new plan had to be made for the Class 67 and so they became rescue locomotives for failed trains on the East coast Main Line, as freight trains or chartered tourist trains.

The trains were put to good use and used by many different companies for many years.  These days, as of 2026, these trains are used for Wales Rail for Premier Services and can be seen in black and red livery or silver and red livery.

The DLC is one people can purchase on sale on STEAM for as low as $3.59 (US).

A total of four liveries are included: EWS maroon (the original livery), EWS Executive Silver (silver with yellow aka “Silver Jubilee”, which was used during the Diamon Jubilee of Elizabeth II celebrations in 2012), royal claret (dark royal blue and was named the “Queen’s Messenger” and used in 2002-2005) and DB Schenker (red with a maple leaf in honor of the Canadian-born former EWS and DB Schenker UK chairman in 2010).

In addition to the trains itself, also included is an MXA wagon, BYA wagon, GUV Post Office NOX, MK1 Guard Main RES.

This train is used on the Great Western Main Line (Oxford-Paddington) (sold separately but fortunately on sale it goes for $3.59 US).

GAMEPLAY:

The DLC comes with five scenarios. Two for maroon and one for each livery.

I feel that the scenarios and the train itself are more on the easy side so beginner and intermediate level players will enjoy this DLC. There is not a whole lot of guesswork for the scenarios, as routes are preset and most of them are stop and go and drive for a long period of time, observing speed changes and stopping again.

You just have to remember that the brakes on this game takes a little time, so you want to start breaking a bit earlier than usual.

Manual is titled “Class 67 Manual” but the manual does not go into what buttons are used. Fortunately, we know that A/D controls power, controlling the Reverser and Power Breaks are easy on HUD. H for headlight (you will do a night drive).

But the Class 67 also uses DSD (Driver Safety Device) which you can turn off via Ctrl-D. The DSD monitors the train’s speed and if you goes up by 5mph, you will need to acknowledge the sound by pressing the button via mouse or numbpad Enter. If you don’t acknowledge, the DSD will activate emergency brakes.

The other cool thing about this train is that it utilizes DRA (Driver Reminder appliance) which is a safeguard to prevent a train from passing a red signal (you stop by hitting the red plunger which stops power being applied to the traction motors). Once the signal clears, the plunger will be released.

JUDGMENT CALL:

The EWS Class 67 is a fun, easy and enjoyable loco add-on. It’s not so demanding and because there are not a whole lot of stops and there are safety features included, I’m confident in saying that any beginners wanting an affordable DLC, this is one of them.

At $3.59US (when on sale), the four liveries and scenarios easily makes this UK freight locomotive a must-buy.

You just have to remember that if you want to use this train on scenarios, you need to purchase another DLC, the Great Western Main Line (Oxford-Paddington) (fortunately on sale it goes for $3.59 US).

It’s a vehicle that does freight, passenger line and with the added rolling stock of MK1 Gangway, MK3 Sleeper Coach, you get so much for your money.

Now, it’s important to note that this is a 2012 DLC. Do not worry because it’s an older 2012 release because it does much better than some recent years DLCs and in 2026, for its value and what it offers, I think it’s a wonderful, cool DLC and that price is a steal when on sale!

Highly recommended!
