Authorities in Japan are stepping up preparations for a potential large-scale eruption of Mount Fuji, which could severely disrupt life across the Tokyo metropolitan area. The last eruption was on December 16, 1707 (during the Hoei era) and ended on February 24, 1708. There have been unconfirmed eruptions from 1708-1854.
