The One about How to Fix Scanners not working Due to Windows 11 24H2

It has been well-documented on how the first initial update due to the Windows 11 24H2 update such as articles like this and forum topics on Microsoft and manufacturer community sites like this.

For small, mid and large markets that depend on scanning and expect it to work each time, since December 2024, this has been an ongoing issue for many IT and employees.

I have been working with scanning manufacturers such as HP to find out ways to get scanning to work again.

MARCH 2025 UPDATE

According to HP and this should work with other scanners as well:

2025-02 Cumulative Update for Windows 11 Version 24H2 for x64-based Systems (KB5052093)

2025-01 Preview cumulative update for .NET Framework 3.5 and 4.8.1 for Windows 11, version 24H2 for x64 (KB5050577)

Please take in consideration that both updates may take approximately 1 hour, so please be patient.

FEBRUARY 2025 UPDATE

The following is a way I have gotten HP Scanjet’s to scan.

As admin, go to your command prompt and run the command:

pnputil /delete-driver escl.inf /uninstall /force

You will get a message which says:

Driver package installed

Failed to delete driver package: the specified file is not an installed OEM INF.

Try scanning again and see if it works. You can also check on Device Manager under Imaging Device and making sure only ONE is showing for your scanner and not two devices. If it shows (USB) this is HPEsclscan.inf, if it shows no (USB) then it uses escl.inf. The goal is to make sure eSCL.inf is uninstalled.

So, in other words, if you look under Imaging Devices, keep the one that has (USB) and remove the other.

This has been 50/50.  I’ve gotten many scannrs to work this way BUT sometimes I have had to re-install the HP Full version of the scanning software and then see both drivers show up and then remove the one without the (USB).

The HP Scanjet software should work, but I also recommend downloading the following free scanning shareware, NAPS2.  Select your scanner’s profile and it should work.

ANOTHER ALTERNATIVE

This is another alternative which HP mentioned, but I would not do this and this to roll back your OS back to 23H2.  You want your computer to be updated with the latest version.  But I understand it’s tough when you see articles like this (this one is in regards to the most recent March 2025 Windows 11 24H2 update).
