The One about Day 31 of my Holiday Film/TV Marathon for 2023: New Girl Season 1, ep. 9 (2011)

This is a memorable Christmas episode from “Fresh Off the Boat” and it’s sad to see the series no longer on television.  It was a rarity to see an Asian family on television that would do very well in the ratings and last that long. Recommended!

The gang attends Schmidt’s holiday office party and Jess frets when she receives an expensive gift from Paul.

As I wait for more holiday films to be made available and easily accessible (as I am reviewing this in advance), I am going to review a few Christmas TV episodes for now.

A Christmas episode that I am reviewing is from “New Girl” season one, episode 9 titled “The 23rd”.

This was a hilarious episode and I remember the series, when it first came on television, it was like a breath of fresh air.  Something new and different. And something I felt television needed, because it had a sort of quirky, but also creative force that made you want to watch because it’s not something you would see normally on television.

For those who are not familiar with the series, it revolves around three male roommates, who take in a fourth roommate…a quirky, bubbly woman named Jess Day.

As for this episode, Jess feels her relationship with Paul Genzlinger (portrayed by Justin Long) is not going well and wants to breakup on Christmas Day.

As the gang go to a Christmas party where Schmidt works.

Schmidt’s boss makes him dress up like a Santa stripper, Winston finds himself being cool with the only kid at the party (which his mother Gina is shocked that her son is acting cool with another person) and Nick, knowing his mother wants him home for Christmas.

So, what will happen at this Christmas party?

If anything, watching it again, it was surprised to see actor Stephen Amell appear on this show.  This was a year before he would become the main star in the CW DC superhero series “Arrow” (which would jumpstart the DC Arrowverse).

But I absolutely loved the ending when the team screams for a neighborhood to turn on their Christmas lights in the wee hours of early morning.

A memorable holiday episode from one of the top creative television series airing in the 2010s.
