The One about OMOTESANDO HILLS Christmas Illumination 2023 – which kicked off on November 9th

OMOTESANDO HILLS Christmas Illumination 2023 kicks off on November 9th and will continue on through Christmas Day.

Shining snowflakes beautifully express the “ephemeral yet precious connections between people”

Introducing a 3D printed sustainable tree made from 100% renewable materials

This year’s Christmas illumination theme is “RE-CRYSTALLIZED” and will feature one of the world’s largest 3D printed Christmas trees, measuring 10 meters in height. The tree is made from approximately 500 snowflakes, most of which are made with a 3D printer using PET material*1, making it a 100% recyclable, sustainable Christmas tree with a low environmental impact .

The design was done by Yajima Sayoko, art director of creative studio KLOKA. The connections between people have suddenly been lost due to the coronavirus pandemic. The symbol of Omotesando Hills, the grand atrium, will be decorated with snowflakes, likening the movement of people joining hands as they realize their transience and preciousness to the “bonds” of a crystalline structure. A special sound and light production will be held every 20 minutes, with the theme of “Ice and Fire” and the tree will change color to match a song written especially for this occasion, creating a fantastical space.

About 3D printers

Most of the tree modeling is done using a 3D printer. At MagnaRecta Co., Ltd., a pioneer in the Japanese 3D printing world, they created a mesh structure that supports approximately 500 snowflakes and trees of different sizes, and combined them into layers to create a 10-meter-tall structure. Creating a tree. They were able to create a delicate and dynamic design by taking full advantage of the advantages of using a 3D printer, such as being able to embody the designer’s ideas as they are, as well as the precision and speed of work that cannot be achieved by hand.

Additionally, the PET material used in this tree is chemically recycled *2 after completion of the project, making it a tree that does not produce any waste. Please enjoy the sustainable Christmas illuminations made possible only by using recyclable materials.
