It was 1989 when many fans of the electronic music band Depeche Mode awaited new music since their 1987 original studio album “Music for the Masses”.

And I can remember it clearly, I was starting college and at the end of August 1989, “Personal Jesus” was released. The song made a big impact, climbing to No. 13 on the UK Single Charts and No. 28 on the Billboard Hot 100, it was the first major hit for Depeche Mode, their first major hit in the US Top 40 since 1984’s “People Are People”.

For me, I was just stoked about hearing the song on KROQ 106.7 (a legendary Los Angeles radio station best known for playing new wave and alternative rock music in the ’80s and ’90s), but I never knew the song would propel Depeche Mode to new heights and being featured on MTV so often.

And I bought the “Personal Jesus” single, followed by their next hit song “Enjoy the Silence” in Feb. 1990.  The single won Best British Single at the 1991 Brit Awards and was certified Gold in the US and Germany.

I was highly anticipating their upcoming album “Violator” which would be released in the spring of 1990 and included “Personal Jesus” and “Enjoy the Silence” and would produce two more additional chart topping singles “Police of Truth” (No. 15 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 16 on the UK Singles Chart) and “World in My Eyes” (No. 52 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and No. 17 on the UK Singles Charts).

Needless to say, I had all the singles in cassette format and then later in CD format just to get the additional remixes and the B-sides.

But I know I have listened to the singles way too much to the point of warping the cassette and as for the CD, scratched up as it was something I would blast on my CD player in my car.

Needless to say, with the 12″ singles releases of hit songs from all of Depeche Mode’s studio albums, it was great to hear these remixes once again.

For “Violator – the 12″ Singles”, you get a lot of the songs as featured on their singles released from 1989-1990.

Granted, the main caveat is you are not going to get the original versions of  “Personal Jesus”, “Police of Truth” and “World in My Eyes”, you will have to purchase the album “Violator”.  But interesting enough, they included “Enjoy the Silence”.

In addition, not all B-side original versions and remixes are included in this release. So, you won’t find “Dangerous”, “Dangerous” (Sensual Mix), “Kaleid”, “Kaleid (When Worlds Mix)”, “Happiest Girl” (Jack Mix), “Sea of Sin (Sensoria)” and “Sea of Sin (Tonal Mix)”.

So, for those wanting 100% of all single tracks from the four hit singles of songs as featured on “Violator”, for “Violator – The 12″ Singles”, you’ll get about 90% of the songs.

But if anything, despite several songs missing from “Violator – The 12″ Singles”, you still get a lot of remix versions and for those nostalgic for the singles they owned or those who are wanting to hear more of Depeche Mode’s various mixes, should definitely get this collection of original tracks and remixes.
